By now, you must know that a little movie called “Rogue One” is being released in theaters nationwide this weekend. There are many people asking – “It’s a Star Wars movie? Where is Luke Skywalker? Where are the lightsabers? What about Rey?”. Sorry to say, but Rogue One will have none of that. The story takes place right before Episode IV: A New Hope. Remember in the opening crawl of the original movie, it said this:
This movie is about just that: how the rebels stole the plans to the Death Star. At that time, there were no Jedi. We seen the mass execution of the Jedi during Order 66 in Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. That is why you will not see any lightsaber duels in this movie. I am hoping we get to see Darth Vader in action, red lightsaber in hand.
Now that you know where this movie takes place in the timeline(after Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and right before Episode IV: A New Hope….aka 35 years before Episode VII: The Force Awakens), let’s take a look at the things you should watch or read before seeing Rogue One!
1. – WATCH – Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope
The one that started it all. I can guarantee you that if for some reason you have not seen this(let alone before watching Rogue One), you will watch it after Rogue One. You know the story, but how does it tie to Rogue One you might ask? Simple. Remember at the beginning of the movie, we see Princess Leia giving something to R2-D2 before she gets captured by Darth Vader? THOSE WERE THE PLANS TO THE DEATH STAR. Yes, the same plans that are newest heroes are fighting for in Rogue One. Also, in Rogue One – we get to see the birth of the Rebel Alliance which is for sure going to be great to see.
2. – READ – Catalyst: A Rogue One Novel
This one will be a little tough(unless you can read a whole book in a matter of days). Author James Luceno dives deep into the back story of some of the characters from Rogue One with Catalyst. I’m sure you’re asking, “Do I need to read this to enjoy Rogue One?”. The answer is no – BUT, will you understand the story and the characters a little bit more? Of course you will. The story revolves around the relationship between scientist Galen Erso(Jyn Erso’s father) and Director Orson Krennic. You learn that they go way back(all the way to the Clone Wars), and that at one point Krennic even saves Erso and his family. We then learn that Krennic is a big part of the Death Star getting built and looks to Erso for help. The only problem is that Erso wants his work to be used for good, while Krennic wants to do everything he can for the Emperor and the Galactic Empire. It’s also cool to see Krennic and Grand Moff Tarkin have a little rivalry to see who can move up further in the ranks of the Empire. Once again, I’m sure this will all be mentioned in Rogue One, but it’s nice to have some depth!
3. – WATCH – Star Wars Rebels
Star Wars Rebels is one of my favorite shows on TV. The show airs on Disney XD and is a big hit amongst Star Wars fans. The show follows a crew of rebels led by Jedi Kanan Jarrus. Also – yes I know, I told you Jedi were nearly extinct during this time – but Star Wars mythology is always constantly changing. Give me a break! The story actually takes place during the exact same time as Rogue One, so people have been speculating how a Star Wars Rebels tie in could take place. The creator of Rebels(Dave Filoni) even acknowledges that they are aware it takes place so close to eachother. I am really hoping we get to see one of the members of the Ghost crew in the film. Even if it’s just a cameo by their droid Chopper!
4. – WATCH – The Clone Wars(Season 5, Episode – A War on Two Fronts)
That right there, that’s Saw Gerrera. He is actually the first character to debut in a show and then make the switch to film. In the movie, he is played by Forest Whitaker. Saw is a rebel leader who fought in the Clone Wars and even fought beside Ashoka Tona and Anakin Skywalker. Fast forward years later, and you can see that the man has been in a few battles. In Rogue One, he is apart of the group of rebels who are out to get the plans of the Death Star.
Alright, those are the main key things I feel people must know before watching Rogue One. Are there more? You bet. But to me, those listed above are the most important. Let’s hope Rogue One will satisfy everyone from hardcore fans to the casual fans!
