Plot: Set in 1970s Los Angeles, down-on-his-luck private eye Holland March (Ryan Gosling) and hired enforcer Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe) must work together to solve the case of a missing girl and the seemingly unrelated death of a porn star.
Review: Who would have thought a buddy cop movie teaming Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe would work so well? The Nice Guys has everything from action to comedy to mystery. Everybody loves a good murder mystery movie, but one that takes place in 1970s Hollywood and revolves around the porn industry – that’s gold. Director Shane Black is back with his spiritual sequel to Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. This is where Black is comfortable, and you can tell because this movie is so much better than Iron Man 3. Hell, I even love the retro Warner Bros logo at the beginning of the movie! This review will be short because since the movie is a murder mystery, the less you know the better.
The movie follows two private investigators looking around LA to find a missing girl who is somehow linked to a recently murdered porn actress. Gosling and Crowe play off eachother perfectly. Gosling plays Holland March who is the detective of the pair. Not the brightest, but happens to stumble upon clues unintentionally. Definitely the comic relief of the pair and Gosling knocks it out of the park. He even specializes in helping people find missing people who are clearly dead. Hilarious and shady at the same time. Crowe plays Jackson Healy who(you guessed it) is the muscle of the two. He is known to take jobs and break a few bones to get the message across. The unlikely pair have insane chemistry together and it works on every level.
Another person who steals the show is Angourie Rice who plays Gosling’s daughter. Not just another “my kid was kidnapped character”, she plays a great part in trying to help the duo find the missing girl. What makes it funnier is that she’s 12 and is usually the one that drives her father around. The bad guys in the movie aren’t as good as they could have been, BUT the movie is more about the mystery. They do fall under your “typical bad guy” category, but the movie is so good that you won’t even notice.
I’m happy Shane Black went back to his style that he is most known for. Crazy to think he directed Iron Man 3 since that movie sucked. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang in my opinion is a classic, and this movie is similar to that. Lovable heroes with great dialogue around a magnificent story. Most common movie goers will most likely either not hear about The Nice Guys, or it will get overshadowed by the movies it is going against this weekend. Hopefully this review will make you want to watch something different in a time where we get alot of movies that are all too similar to eachother. This movie deserves to be a hit as well as a franchise. I am giving The Nice Guys a 8.5/10.
