Plot: A feud between Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man(Robert Downey Jr.) leaves the Avengers in turmoil.
Review: Captain America: Civil War is easily one of the two best superhero movies of all time(with The Dark Knight) and one of the best action movies to date. This is what Batman v Superman should have been. The movie is entertaining from start to finish. I know most people are looking at this movie as if it’s The Avengers 3, it’s not. This is a true sequel to The Winter Soldier mixed with some Avengers elements. The story revolves around Cap trying to protect Bucky aka The Winter Soldier because he is the only one that knows there is still good in him. The Russo brothers have struck gold again!
The movie picks up where Age of Ultron ends – Cap leading a new team of Avengers who happen to be on a mission to stop Crossbones. While trying to commit suicide by igniting his bomb vest, Scarlet Witch uses her power to throw him unknowingly into a building full of people while the bomb detonates. Once again the media portrays The Avengers as a danger to society. At the same time half way across the world, a parent approaches Tony Stark saying that The Avengers were to blame for her son’s death(events in Sokovia in Age of Ultron).
We then get the returning U.S Secretary of State Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross(played by William Hurt) who brings the superhero team together to show them that the United Nations will being passing the Sokovia Accords. The act would mean The Avengers would act only when the United Nations would see fit. The Sokovia Accords is what splits the team in half – Tony Stark agreeing with the act(guilty over Sokovia), while Steve Rogers not trusting the government’s agendas. This is what leads to, you guessed it, Civil War!
The Russo brothers are on a roll right now. They knocked The Winter Soldier out of the park, and now they do the same with Civil War. We should all be happy that they are directing the Infinity Wars. With a movie that has as much characters as Civil War, they perfectly gave everybody the right amount of screen time. Of course at the end of the day this is a Captain America movie – so Cap, Falcon, and the Winter Soldier get the most screen time. I will tell you that the ending of the movie that revolves around Captain America, Iron Man, and the Winter Soldier is shocking and amazing. I did not see it coming at all. The main villain wasn’t as good as he could have been, but that’s the thing Marvel is known for. But then again – you don’t need a good villain when you have the heroes battling it out.
Other than the two main heroes, my favorite scenes involved Ant-Man, Black Panther(great on-screen debut), and of course Spider-Man. Chadwick Boseman is excellent as the Black Panther and all I kept thinking about was his upcoming solo movie and being very excited for that. Paul Rudd is just as funny as Ant-Man in Civil War as he was in his own standalone movie(which was underrated in my opinion). We even see Ant-Man do something that hasn’t been seen in film yet, but fans of the comics will freak out over. But of course the main person people will be talking about is Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. We all know by now the deal that Sony and Marvel had to have Spider-Man in this movie. If you didn’t – Marvel gets to include Spider-Man in their cinematic universe, while Sony gets their Spider-Man movie produced by Marvel. THE DEAL WAS PERFECT. This is the Spider-Man that we have been waiting for. A high school kid that is star struck with all the superheros he is fighting. I don’t want to give too much away, but the web slinger will be one of the main things people will be talking about walking out the theater.
There is no doubt in my mind that Civil War will be the comic book movie of the year. The airport sequence will go down as one of the greatest scenes in movie history. It’s a shame that DC couldn’t get Batman V Superman right. That will also be on the mind of alot of people walking out. I really hope we get more Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark. The man is perfect. It was announced that he will be starring in the stand alone Spidey movie, so we have that to look forward to as well. Captain America: Civil War is just another example of the powerhouse that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fans will be in for a treat, and I expect alot of repeat viewings. Up next is Doctor Strange! I give Captain America: Civil War a 9/10.
