Hella Butter Reviews: Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back!

To most fans, The Empire Strikes Back is the best Star Wars movie in the franchise. Those same people would even argue that this may in fact be the best movie of all time, period. I would have to agree with them. The Empire Strikes Back is in my opinion – the greatest sequel of all time as well. The drama is at an all time high in this one. It ends on a cliffhanger, but it’s the journey and test that our heroes have to go through that make this one unforgettable. This also might be the Star Wars film that contains it’s most famous and iconic quote.

The film picks up where A New Hope left off. I’m sure by now if you’ve been keeping up with my reviews, the Rebel Alliance are trying to take down the evil Galactic Empire. They succeeded by destroying the first Death Star, but of course that didn’t win the war. We get introduced to the ice planet Hoth which is the new base for the Rebels. It is there Luke Skywalker interacts with the force ghost of his mentor and former Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi. Obi-Wan informs Luke to go to the Dagobah system to train under the other Jedi Master named Yoda. Yes, this was the first Star Wars film to inteoduce our little green friend. There, Luke learns the patience and struggle it takes to become a Jedi Knight. It’s great to see Yoda as a puppet being performed by the legendary Frank Oz.

On the topic of Yoda being introduced, we get introduced to alot of iconic Star Wars characters in this entry. We get Lando Calrissian who is a friend of Han Solo and the Administrator of Cloud City(and also the former owner of Han’s Millenniun Falcon). We meet the bounty hunter Boba Fett who has always been a fan favorite. The thing that makes certain characters cool is when you don’t know much about them. You can speculate, but it’s the mystery that’s fun and cool. We also get to meet Emperor Palpatine for a brief moment.

There are two main things that fans talk about when they think of The Empire Strikes Back. The first is the confrontation between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. It is also the first time they ever meet face to face. See – Luke has a vision of Han and Leia in danger and goes to save them. Yoda tells him he is not ready to face Vader yet, but of course he goes anyways! The two have an epic showdown with the lightsaber duel being more fast paced than the one in A New Hope. So that was dope. Vader also reveals a family secret to Luke after cutting his hand off! It is easily one of my favorite scenes in movie history.

The other elemant fans love about this film is the love story between Han Solo and Princess Leia. Even though Leia is in denial, she clearly falls for “bad boy” in Han. When the group fly into Cloud City, they are greeted by Lando. Well little did they know Vader manipulated Lando into capturing the group and performs to do a carbon freezing test on Han(which he performs to use on Luke ans bring him to the Emperor). Yes ladies and gentleman, this movie is also the film where Han Solo gets frozen in the carbonite. You can start to see why fans love this movie so much. We also get the iconic scene where right before Han gets frozen, Leia tells Han that she loves him – to which he replies “I know”. Even before getting frozen alive, Mr. Solo is still a smooth talker.

The Empire Strikes Back is a perfect movie. The fact that George Lucas took the risk of ending this film on a bad note paid off successfully. It helps us be emotionally involved with the characters. We WANTED to see what would happen next. So the real question is – did the following movie(Return of the Jedi) live up to the hype following Empire? Well you’ll have to see tomorrow when we post the review here on Hella Butter! But anyways, because of the highten story, the melodrama, and the film ending on a brilliant cliffhanger – I give The Empire Strikes Back a 10/10.
