The Voices review by Teejay McFly!

Plot: Jerry (Ryan Reynolds) seems like a regular guy but he’s hiding a secret. Every night when he goes home to his apartment, his dog and cat speak to him- literally- with his dog trying to keep the peace while his cat tells him to go out and kill.

Review: In 2014, i heard of a movie called The Voices starring Ryan Reynolds. I never had the chance to see it till now, but holy shit this movie is pretty damn good. Im surprised this movie didn’t get a wide release, but after watching it, it isn’t hard to see why. The movie itself is a dark comedy but sometimes goes on the border line of a horror movie. That’s what happens when your main character is a sweet and lovable serial killer.

The story follows a regular guy named Jerry(Reynolds) as he works in a factory. Within the first 10 minutes, you see the character is a schizophrenic and hears voices in his head. Funny thing is, it’s his dog and cat speaking to him. Jerry is somewhat of a socially awkward type of guy at work. He is very friendly, but you can tell there is something strange about him. He has a co-worker that he is somewhat obsessed with named Fiona. She may be easy on the eyes, but she is stuck-up and even stands Jerry up on a date. Driving from the restaurant alone, he see’s Fiona stranded on the side of a road(she came from a bar) and picks her up. I guess you can say things get a little messy from there.

The movie that i kept thinking about while watching The Voices was Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. For the record, Psycho is one of my favorite movies of all time. Ryan Reynolds’s Jerry strongly reminded me of Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates. They both are serial killers, but on the outside look sweet and innocent. I guess those are the ones you have to look out for. Even though Reynolds portrays a twisted man with a sickness, you still feel sorry for him. The character’s mother also heard “angels” in her head. Ryan Reynolds is brilliant as Jerry. If it wasn’t for him, i don’t think the movie would have been as good. Even though he is listening to his cat telling him to kill people, you forget it’s really him thinking of these thoughts. Gemma Arterton plays Fiona. She does a great job coming off as a bitch in the beginning, but once you realize what her role is throughout the rest of the movie – you can’t help but laugh. Arterton may come off as the lead female character, but to me Anna Kendrick steals the spotlight as their other sweet coworker Lisa. Kendrick always plays a sweet character, but it works even better in The Voices – especially when the main character is murderer.

I am going to keep this review short so that way you(the reader) will be as surprised as i was while watching this. I actually seen this without seeing a trailer, so EVERYTHING shocked me. The Voices is pretty much an updated version of Psycho, but with a little comedy. I guarantee you that this movie will have a cult following after word of mouth gets around of how great this movie is. Nowadays, these independent movies that nobody ever really hears about are really the timeless type of movies. Im assuming a major studio didn’t want to release the movie thinking it wouldn’t have made a lot of movie, and they would be right. This isn’t the type of film to make a lot of money and appeal to the masses. It’s one of those movies that you have to “get” to truly appreciate it. And i sure as hell appreciate this movie. Marjane Satrapi(the director) did an excellent job with this movie. I sure hope you all watch it! I give The Voices a 9/10.
