It must suck to work at Sony. Their email account got hacked and revealed a TON of insider scoop. Most of it was work complaints to salary data. BUT there are 3 main topics(so far) that will have people talking. I’ll give them to you one by one so it’s easier to take in:
Spider-Man joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
This might be the biggest news since comic book fans have been waiting for this moment for awhile. It seems that Sony and Marvel were in discussion to have Spider-Man appear in Captain America: Civil War. If you are familiar with the Civil War story, you know Spidey plays a HUGE part in the story. The deal went like this: Marvel Studios would produce Sony’s Spider-Man franchise, but Sony would keep all of the profit and creative control, in exchange for Spidey to show up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I can see where things went wrong. Why would Marvel produce a film that they have no creative control in? It seems like Marvel wouldn’t benefit in anything other than having Spider-Man show up and obviously bring in bucks for a Marvel Studios movie. Still doesn’t seem like a fair trade to me since the Marvel Cinematic Universe doesn’t need Spider-Man as much as Sony needs Marvel Studios.
Studio tired of Adam Sandler movies.
I was actually surprised about this one since they do not stop putting out horrible Adam Sandler movies. No disrespect to Sandler. I grew up loving his movies. Obviously it’s no surprise all his films are shit now(once again no offense). In the emails, a worker there said they should “stop focusing on Sandler films and straight to DVD movies”. It’s also noted that Happy Madison benefits from their Sony Pictures deal more than the studio itself. I wonder what effect the email will have on future Sandler films. Here is one of the quotes about Sandler:
“Althought we manage to produce an innovative film once in awhile, Social Network, Moneyball, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, we continue to be saddled with the mundane, formulaic Adam Sandler films.”
Focus on franchises and blockbusters.
It seems Sony is trying to come up with it’s next Hunger Games or Twilight franchise. In the email the person repeatedly says that Spider-Man is Sony’s only franchise. And that they only release a new Spidey movie every 3-4 years, where as other studios have franchise movies come out almost every year. The person also says they should stop leaning towards autobiography movies in order to make a new original franchise. Here is another part if that email below:
“Are you aware that Men In Black 3 may gross $600M at the box office, and yet will lose money for SPE? Shouldn’t we question that strategy? Why are some studios making Hunger Games, Harry Potter, Twilight – and we are considering movies like Moneyball, Steve Jobs story, Captain Phillips Story, Evel Knievel story, etc. Are you aware that SPE only has 1 franchise – Spiderman. Yet, it took 5 years to generate a sequel? Spidey 3 was released in summer 2007, #4 in 2012. Don’t harry potters come out over 2-3 years? Are you aware that SPE has only 1 franchise – Spidey? Yet we waited 5 years after Spidey 3 (2007) to release #4? Have you read the SEC annual report? Disney will make $300M on Spidey merchandise this year alone. We won’t!”
