The Movie Studios vs The People by Teejay McFly.

Movie studios DON’T CARE ABOUT YOU. There i had to say it. Yeah, nobody wants to make a movie that sucks, but at the end of the day – it’s all about the money. They could care less about the movie getting horrible reviews. I mean hell, look at EVERY TRANSFORMERS MOVIE. Aren’t they on number 4 now? Excuse my language, but HOW IN THE FUCK IS EACH MOVIE GETTING WORSE AND WORSE EVERY TIME. Don’t believe me? Rotten Tomatoes has the first Transformers to last scored at 57%, 19%, 36%, and then this years Age of Extinction at 18%. Let that sink in. Michael Bay and a lot of other studio heads pretty much just said “we don’t care if our movies are shit, they will still bring in a ton of money.” Oh, so you say “those types of movies aren’t made to be taken seriously”? That’s funny, last time i checked, Guardians of the Galaxy was the highest money making movie of the year AND had a score of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. So there is NO excuse to not try and make a film as good as it can be. There have been plenty of examples of movies making a shit ton of money WHILE being what it was supposed to be in the first place – a good movie.

There is nothing more i hate than movie studios getting in the way of creative and talented directors. Most recent example, Edgar Wright. He is the director of Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead, Scott Pilgrim, etc. If you have seen ANY of those movies, you know the man is brilliant. So he had an idea to make a movie about Marvel’s Ant-Man. He had been working on it for 12 years. 12 years is a mighty long time. Anyways, Marvel(given the winning streak they are on) finally decide to give Ant-Man a shot. Guess who they ask to direct it, none other than Edgar Wright. Everything is looking great, they signed Paul Rudd, and Michael Douglas. BUT Marvel isn’t letting Edgar Wright have complete writing control. A guy who has been trying to get a movie made on this character for 12 years, isn’t the one in charge. So guess what, HE LEAVES THE PROJECT. Yeah, im sure the movie will be fine(financially and critically), but the reason i bring this up is because we will never get Edgar Wrights full vision on Ant-Man because of creative differences. It’s a damn shame.

You ever notice that some movies have a lot of sequels? Not like a trilogy(which there are plenty that i love), but im taking about more than 5? Chances are, 98% of movie series that have more than 5 films, more than half probably suck. But why are they being made? The fact is that people will keep pouring money into it. Look at every horror movie franchise. Most of them, the first film was always the best. The first Saw movie was original and excellent. After the third, i just stopped giving a damn. It’s like taking something original and creative and turning it commercial.

But there are a few that get it right. The new Planet of the Apes movies are being made with care for the original fan base. That’s why they are successful. Marvel is also still killing the game. DC is trying to mold their own cinematic universe so lets see how they do with that(upcoming Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice). The one i am the most excited for, and I’m sure most of you are too, Star Wars: Episode 7. I mean you would think it can’t get worse than the prequel trilogy. Let’s hope so. J.J. Abrams is a great director and i have plenty of faith. At the end of the day, lets make good movies that make a lot of money. The studios would win, and most importantly, the people would win.
