Synopsis: Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix) is a complex, soulful man who makes his living writing touching, personal letters for other people. Heartbroken after the end of a long relationship, he becomes intrigued with a new, advanced operating system, which promises to be an intuitive entity in its own right, individual to each user. Upon initiating it, he is delighted to meet “Samantha” (voiced by Scarlett Johansson), a bright, female voice, who is insightful, sensitive and surprisingly funny. As her needs and desires grow, in tandem with his own, their friendship deepens into an eventual love for each other.
Review: HER might be my favorite film of the year. The story itself is so bizarre, yet you would not be surprised if it really happened. Spike Jonze took a chance with this film and luckily it goes beyond expectations. With a movie like HER, everything has to be right. Especially which actors you choose to star in it. Luckily Joaquin Phoenix brings his A-game, while Scarlett Johansson lends her voice to bring the OS(operating system) to life. A lot of people have been saying Scarlett Johansson should be up for an award for Best Supporting Actress even tho her face is never shown. While i agree that it is worthy, i don’t think she should be nominated. If that was the case, why don’t actors who do fantastic voice overs in CGI films get nominated? You never see their face either. Joaquin Phoenix on the other hand deserves at the very least a nomination for Best Actor. If he doesn’t, it would be a robbery.
The film follows Theodore Twombly(Joaquin Phoenix), a man who spends most of his days working as a writer who writes cards for people. Rather than a greeting card they’re more personalized. He is great at what he does, but his love life isn’t as good. Theodore is currently going through a divorce with his wife(who keeps insisting he sign the divorce papers). He then finds out about an OS(Operating System) that not only organizes you’re stuff, but also more personal with you. Picture Siri, but an OS that has actual conversations and knows about you. Theodore’s OS names herself “Samantha”. From there they build a relationship that not only sounds crazy, but with the way technology is nowadays, not surprising.
One thing i loved about HER was the way the film looked. The film has a dark tone, but Joaquin Phoenix’s bright attire was a great mix. The shots of this movie were done beautifully by Hoyte Van Hoytema. Chris Pratt does a great job playing Phoenix’s fun loving co-worker “Paul”. Amy Adams also is great playing Theodore’s friend “Amy”. She not only understands that he is dating an OS, but is very supportive towards it. Not too sure if i have any friends that would be ok with me dating an OS.
Congrats Mr. Jonze on creating another beautiful work of art. It is a great film to end the year. Everything about this movie is perfect -the sets, the characters, the actors, the cinematography. Very rare when a film has ALL of those elements. I give HER….10/10.
